Types of Brain Injuries
New York Lawyers: Types of Brain Injury
Our Attorneys Will Help You Understand Brain Injuries
The severity of a brain injury and related neurological injury often depends upon the amount and nature of the force to the head. While symptoms are often shared or repeated, each person is unique and therefore there are unique qualities in all types of brain injuries. As a result of our extensive experience with brain injury and neurological cases, we are able to call upon the necessary experts to prove the necessary elements of even the most difficult case.
At Ostrer & Hoovler, P.C., we represent the victims of many different brain injury types, including:
- Coupe-contra coup injury: These injuries cause cerebral contusions and hematomas on the opposite side of the brain than the impact. Some of the causes of these injuries include shaken baby syndrome and car accidents.
- Second impact syndrome: This rare condition is when the brain swells severely after a concussion. It can easily lead to death and severe disability.
- Diffuse axonal injury: This is one of the most common types of brain injury and is a widespread injury to brain axons (also called nerve cells).
- Concussion: A concussion can occur when the brain becomes bruised because of a hit or violent shock to the head.
- Temporal lobe injury: The temporal lobe, located on both sides of the brain behind the ear, is responsible for speech, hearing and memory. Injuries to this part of the brain can be catastrophic.
- Occipital lobe injury: The occipital lobe is the back portion of the brain that controls vision (reception and interpretation). Injuries can affect your ability to read, write and identify objects.
- Frontal lobe injury: The frontal lobe is located behind the forehead and is the largest of the lobes in the brain, controlling major thought functions (voluntary and involuntary), including personality.
- Parietal lobe injury: This lobe of the brain, located near the top of the head, helps integrate various sensory information in the body that regulates spatial sense and navigation.
- Closed head injury: This is a traumatic brain injury that does not puncture the skull or the surrounding dura matter.
- Brain bleeds: A brain injury can result from any number of hemorrhages or hematomas. Brain bleed injuries are classified into the following categories: epidural hematoma, subdural hematoma, subarachnoid hemorrhage, intracerebral hemorrhage or intraventricular hemorrhage.
- Brain stem injury: The brain stem is the base of the brain that connects the brain to the spinal cord. This part of the brain provides basic attention, arousal and consciousness functions.
- Coma: A coma is a state of deep unconsciousness where the person cannot be awakened, does not take voluntary actions and is not responsive to pain or light.
